DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp (1990)
When you’re a kid, having one of your favorite cartoon shows turned into a movie is a huge deal. Shows like Transformers, G.I. Joe and Thundercats are some of my favorites. But there was one cartoon movie that stands out in my memory for a very special reason: DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp, released August 3rd, 1990.
This movie was released in theatres but I never got the chance to see it on the big screen and that made me sad because it was one of my favorite shows. It did, however, play on television sometime after it's theatrical release which is where my story starts.
The channel that regularly ran the cartoon daily was showing the whole movie in two parts, back to back one weekend and I just about flipped my bill. I was finally going to see the DuckTales movie. It was going to be on later than my bedtime so it was already a special occasion that I was staying up for. What made the event even more awesome was my mom was allowing two of my best friends to sleep over.
In my mind it was going to be great. We had all of our snacks planned, video games ready to be turned on after the movie and we pulled all the pillows off the couches to make child size mattresses for ourselves.
The movie was about to start and we were more than ready. Then a funny thing happened. One of the last commercials to air before the show started was one for the do-it-yourself pizza brand Boboli.
Their signature catch phrase was "Only you can top Boboli" and that, in turn, became our catch phrase not only for that night but for years to come. We laughed so hard at that and that laughter led to couch cushions being thrown around, chip bowls being toppled over and the inevitable farting on each other's pillows. What else would you expect from 4 pre-pubescent boys?
Oh yeah, my little brother was there too.
We had such a raucous good time that by the time the movie was over we didn't really watch any of it. And you know what? I was actually okay with that because I had such a great night with my friends. So when I finally laid my head down on my flatulence soaked pillow in the wee hours of the morning, I told myself, "Guess I'll have to catch it on VHS."
